Who I was Then:
Between ages 14-32, I made choices that led me down a path of criminal activities and years of legal trouble. In retrospect, my criminal past was rooted in a combination of misguided decisions, personal struggles, and a profound lack of self-awareness. During this time, my mindset was clouded by a distorted perception of reality, where short-term gains took precedence over long-term consequences. I found myself incarcerated on more than a dozen occasions. However, it was during those challenging times that I had the chance to reflect on the consequences of my actions and the impact my behavior had on my life and the lives of those around me.
My criminal record included several recurring charges, notably, two possessions with the intent to deliver crack cocaine, two charges for simple possession of marijuana, and four domestic abuse charges, which all paint a bleak picture of a troubled past. This period of my life was marked by poor decisions and disregard for the consequences of my actions. Engaging in criminal activities, particularly with the intent to deliver and substance abuse, was, unfortunately, a misguided attempt to fill a void or escape from the challenges I faced. My multiple charges of domestic abuse, reflects a deeply flawed understanding of conflict resolution and an inability to manage personal relationships constructively.
Looking back, I recognize that my mentality was marked by impulsivity, a lack of empathy, and a skewed sense of priorities. It is crucial to acknowledge my past mistakes, not to justify them, but rather to highlight the transformative journey I've undertaken to evolve beyond the mindset that once fueled my criminal behavior. Having faced the legal system, I acknowledge my wrongdoing and took responsibility for my actions. I served the required sentences and completed any mandated rehabilitation programs, fully recognizing the need for personal growth and change.
Who I am Now:
Upon my last release from prison, I made a commitment to turn my life around. I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, seeking education and vocational training to equip myself with the skills necessary for a better future. I have achieved academic milestones, enrolling and graduating from barber college in 2012, as well as, completing both my bachelor's (2014) and master's degree (2019) at the University of Northern Iowa. This educational accomplishment, coupled with my entrepreneurial journey, underscores my commitment to leading a life of responsibility and positive influence. It was not an easy road, but determination and resilience became my guiding principles.
Fast forward to today, I am proud to share that I am continuously transforming my life. In 2017, I became the owner of my own business, Kut Kings Mobile Barbershop. And in 2021, I opened my own brick and mortar shop, Kut Kings Barbershop and Salon. Whereas, both businesses I started from the ground up. These ventures not only provide me with a sense of accomplishment but also allows me to contribute positively to my community. In addition to being a college graduate and an entrepreneur, I am also a single father, privileged to have custody of my 13 year old son, since he was 9 months old. That being said, parenthood has been a profound and life-changing experience, further reinforcing my commitment to leading a life of responsibility and positive influence.
Conclusion:
I have written this, not to focus on the past, but to convey my heartfelt appreciation for the opportunities that have empowered me to reconstruct my life. I acknowledge the significance of my past actions and their potential impact on others. However, I am resolute in my commitment to leverage these experiences as a catalyst for inspiring positive change. My journey stands as a testament to the belief that transforming one's life for the better is not only possible but also well within reach.
I am open to any avenues that allow me to contribute positively to society and to use my story to encourage others who may be facing similar challenges. I am eager to participate in community outreach programs, mentorship initiatives, or any other endeavor that aligns with my commitment to redemption and giving back. I am also eager to serve as a beacon of light and inspiration for those on a similar journey of positive transformation.
